Community Theater is less approximately five miles east of the Westin Governor Morris, located off of CR-510/Columbia Turnpike.
The Community Theater dates back to 1937 when it was built by Walter Reade to house a premier motion picture theater. Fast forward to 1994, volunteers invested their time and efforts to reopen the theater to a sell-out crowd in September 1994 for a performance featuring The Kirov Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Russia.
In 2006, a $7 million Capital Campaign was launched and as the money came in it was utilized to upgrade many technical aspects of the theater. By 2008, the Capital Campaign had raised $6.3 million.
Top name performers have graced the stage of the Community Theater…Tony Bennett, Liza Minelli, Michael Feinstein and Linda Eder. 2008 will mark the first year for a summer concert series, newly christened by The Brooklyn Reunion Doo-Wop Show.
The Community Theater has a performing arts school for children aged 7 – 10 and also for young adults ages 10 – 15. There is a one-week summer session and one two-week summer session.
The Community Theater is pleased to house the ‘Art Upstairs Gallery’, located in the upper lobby of the theatre, featuring established and emerging artists from New Jersey. Theatre patrons and the general public can view exhibits before and after theatre performances or by special appointment.
