Historic Speedwell Village is less than three miles northwest of the Westin Governor Morris, located on Route 202/Speedwell Avenue.

The Vail House and the Telegraph Factory are considered the core of Historic Speedwell.  Forward thinking in 1966, Historic Speedwell was incorporated as a non-profit historic preservation site.  The land comprises 7 ½ acres and houses three farm buildings, which date back to approximately 1841.  Three other late-18th or early-19th century buildings were moved to Speedwell, the Gabriel Ford Cottage, Moses Estey House and L’Hommedieu-Gwinnup House.

In working together, concerned citizens have preserved our past by reconstructing and restoring Speedwell.  Historic Speedwell is now on the National Register of Historic Places and the Telegraph Factory is a National Landmark. 

The Vail House was the estate of Stephen Vail, owner of Speedwell Ironworks.  As a result of his hard work and perseverance, Speedwell Ironworks became a force in helping make northern New Jersey a major industrial center.

The Telegraph Factory is the location where Samuel F.B. Morse and Alfred Vail perfected the telegraph in 1837-1838.  The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1975.
