George Washington’s Headquarters (The Ford Mansion) is less than a mile southwest of the Westin Governor Morris, located on Morris Avenue just west of I-287.
The Ford Mansion was built between the years of 1772 and 1774 for Mr. Jacob Ford. The Georgian style mansion housed the Ford family and in 1779, General George Washington rented the home for the winter of 1779-1780. During the term of his stay, the Ford family occupied only two rooms of the house as General Washington brought a full staff of servants and his Aides-de-Camp.
A permanent display “War Comes to Morristown: The Impact of the Revolutionary War Upon a Small Village, 1775-1783” illustrates how the American Revolution affected Morristown’s civilians when George Washington came to town and brought an army of soldiers with him.
George Washington’s Headquarters is run by the National Park Service and offer Ranger Guided tours daily.
